  • SEC Power Rankings, Week 6

    Avery Williamson | Kentucky Wildcats

Alabama – It was another workmanlike performance for the Crimson Tide, who took care of business against the much improved Ole Miss Rebels. Nick Saban now has a bye week to help his team prepare for an interesting road trip to Missouri on October 13.

Georgia – UGA emerged victorious from a slugfest with Tennessee in Week Five, getting huge performances from standout freshmen RBs Todd Gurley and Keith Marshall. There might not be a team better suited to take down Alabama.

LSU – Since demolishing Washington in Week 2, the Tigers have not looked quite as impressive. A big win in Gainesville in Week Six will change that perception.

South Carolina – It is safe to say that Marcus Lattimore is back. The junior RB is third in the conference in rushing yards, and Steve Spurrier will rely on him more than ever as the Gamecocks enter the heart of their conference schedule.

Florida – The defense continues to be as good as advertised, but it is the offense that has the Gators in the thick of the conference race. QB Jeff Driskel has improved by leaps and bounds in his second season.

Mississippi State – The second month of the season will tell us a lot more about the Bulldogs, who breezed through an easy September schedule unscatched.

Texas A&M – Kevin Sumlin’s offense works in the SEC. Just ask Arkansas, who got steamrolled by QB Johnny Manziel and the Aggies 58-10. No one wants to face this offense down the stretch.

Tennessee – It is pretty clear that the offense is not the issue for Derek Dooley and Co, as the Vols put up nearly 500 yards on a talented Georgia defense. But the defense was gashed on the ground by the Bulldogs, and the road ahead (Mississippi State, Alabama, South Carolina) does not get any easier.

Missouri – The offense has surprisingly struggled in the early going, but Mizzou has a great chance to notch their first SEC win against Vanderbilt on Saturday.

Ole Miss – The Rebels showed a lot of resolve in hanging around against ‘Bama. Hugh Freeze just does not have the defensive talent to consistently compete with the best schools in the conference yet.

Auburn – The reeling Tigers got a much needed bye in Week Five, and host the equally embattled Razorbacks in a must win for each team’s bowl hopes.

Kentucky – The Kentucky Wildcats definitely miss QB Maxwell Smith, who is out indefinitely with an ankle injury. UK will now turn to a pair of freshmen signal callers in hopes of salvaging the season.

Arkansas – Few teams have fallen this far as quickly as the Razorbacks, who have seen their once promising season deteriorate.

Vanderbilt – The Commodores are still licking their wounds after an embarrassing showing against Georgia in Week Four, and hopefully used their bye week to regroup. Next up is a trip to Missouri in what amounts to a must win for Vandy coach James Franklin.

  • Tigers Squeak By Warhawks in Overtime Thriller

    Onterio McCalebb | Auburn Tigers

The Auburn Tigers earned their first win of the season in Week Three, narrowly edging the Louisiana Monroe Warhawks in overtime, with Tigers’ kicker Cody Parkey connecting on a 35-yard field goal in the first period of extra time. This was the same that ULM team that got the best of the Arkansas Razorbacks on the road in Little Rock, so a win against the Warhawks should not be taken lightly for head coach Gene Chizik and his young Auburn team. While quarterback Kiehl Frazier did not put up tremendous numbers, he was more efficient passing against ULM than he has been, and his 33-yard touchdown catch in the second quarter provided a spark to the passing game. The running game was essential in helping the Tigers avoid the upset, as Auburn piled up 255 yards on the ground. Onterio McCalebb was terrific, needing just 11 carries to rack up 128 yards and a touchdown, while Tre Mason was a workhorse for the offense, with 22 carries for 90 yards and a score. The success of the ground game helped take pressure off embattled QB Frazier, as the sophomore has taken longer than expected to master the offense. The Tigers will need their running backs to generate yards and help control the clock, especially against the better teams in the conference.

Auburn will look to take all the positive momentum from this game and use it for Week Four’s crucial matchup with defending SEC-champion LSU. The LSU Tigers come off a methodical 63-14 victory over Idaho, and Auburn will need to be at the top of its game in order to take down the No. 2 team in the nation. Chizik’s defense will need to perform much better against LSU than it did in the second half against the Warhawks, when the Tigers surrendered a 14 point lead in the final seven minutes of the game. LSU’s ground game has been devastating this year, and Auburn needs to be able to slow down Kenny Hilliard, Alfred Blue and the rest of the Bayou Bengals’ stable of runners. If Auburn’s run defense holds up well, pass rushing terror Corey Lemonier could make LSU quarterback Zach Mettenberger uncomfortable in the pocket. Defeating LSU will be a big challenge for Auburn, but earning their first win of the 2012 season should give them some much needed momentum in their upset bid.

  • Where Are They Now: Jacob Tamme

Jacob Tamme | Kentucky Wildcats Football

Few players over the last decade have represented Kentucky Wildcats football as well as tight end Jacob Tamme, a standout both on the field and the classroom. A three year starter for the Wildcats, Tamme proved to be a difficult matchup for most SEC defenses, and he was a two-time first-team all conference performer under former coach Rich Brooks. Just as impressively, he was a four-year member of the SEC Academic Honor roll, and in 2007 was a finalist for the Draddy Trophy as the top student-athlete in the country. Tamme finished his career as one of the most accomplished pass catchers at the tight end position in the history of the conference, ranking second all-time with 133 catches for 1,417 yards.

Despite his success on the field, Tamme dropped down draft boards due some perceived physical limitations, in particular his lack of great size at 6-foot-3 and 236 pounds. As a result, he lasted until the 4th round of the 2008 NFL Draft, where he was drafted by the Indianapolis Colts. Underutilized his first two years in the league, Tamme exploded onto the scene in 2010 after an injury to Pro Bowler Dallas Clark opened up a spot in the Colts’ tight end rotation. Tamme responded with 67 receptions for 631 yards and four touchdowns, becoming a reliable target for Peyton Manning in the middle of the field. While Tamme saw his production fall way off in 2011, most of the blame can be attributed to poor play from Indy’s quarterbacks, and Tamme signed a three-year, $9 million contract with the Denver Broncos during the offseason. Reunited with Manning in Denver, Tamme opened the season as a the Broncos’ starting tight end, and he totaled five catches for 43 yards and a touchdown in Denver’s season opening win against the Steelers. Neither the strongest or the fastest tight end in the league, Tamme just knows how to get open, and uses his immense knowledge of opposing defenses to provide a reliable target for his quarterback on a consistent basis. Tamme may not be a household name around the NFL, but his steady presence and stellar reputation will keep him in the league for a long time.

  • Where Are They Now: BenJarvus Green-Ellis

    BenJarvus Green-Ellis | Miss Tickets

The Ole Miss football program has done a great job of putting players into the NFL, and one of the most successful former Rebels now playing in the league is standout running back BenJarvus Green-Ellis. Green-Ellis, known around the league as “The Law Firm”, was a crucial piece in the New England Patriots’ run to the Super Bowl a season ago, and his success earned him a three- year, $9 million deal with the Cincinnati Bengals, who were on the market for a starting running back during the offseason.

Green-Ellis’ path to Ole Miss was different than the typical Rebels’ football player, as he transferred in after two successful seasons at the University of Indiana. A Freshman All-American with the Hoosiers in 2003, Green-Ellis transferred to Ole Miss after his sophomore season, in 2005, and went on to become one of the most successful runners in the history of the program. In his first year with the Rebels, he ran for exactly 1,000 yards and seven touchdowns, and was named first-team All-SEC. He broke the 1,000 yard barrier again as a senior with 1,137 yards, becoming only the second player in Ole Miss history with back-to-back 1,000 yard seasons. However, despite his successful in two major conferences, Green-Ellis went was not picked in the 2008 NFL draft, and was signed as an undrafted rookie by the Patriots. The rest of the league’s loss was New England’s gain, as he has developed into one of the best backs in the NFL.

Green-Ellis is a big, physical runner at 5-foot-11, 215 pounds, and is not afraid of running through contact if necessary. He was particularly effective in the red zone and near the goal line, and has been in the top 10 in the league in rushing touchdowns each of the last two seasons, totaling 24 scores from 2010-2011. He has also never fumbled in an NFL game, a stat that has surely earned him a lot of trust with his coaches, as they know he is not going to put them in vulnerable situations with turnovers. While he is not a big play threat, with a long run of just 18 yards a season ago, Green-Ellis is valuable because of his reliability and dependability, traits that will keep him in the league for a long time. Fans with Ole Miss tickets did not get to see him for very long, but in his time with the Rebels, few runners were as consistent as Green-Ellis.

  • Top Players in the SEC: 2000-2009

    Darren McFadden

Tim Tebow, QB – Florida: Tebow is not only the best player from the conference during the 2000s, he is among a handful of the greatest players in all of college football during the decade. The heart and soul of Florida’s 2008 championship squad, and a key member of the 2006 BCS winning team, Tebow left his mark on the SEC in numerous ways. A true dual-threat playmaker behind center, Tebow is among the top ten quarterbacks in single season passing touchdowns, career passing yardage and career touchdowns, and leads all players in career rushing touchdowns with an incredible 57. He was the first sophomore to win the Heisman Trophy, amassing 55 total touchdowns in his record breaking 2007 season. One of the true icons of the sport over the last decade, Tebow also stands out for his toughness, team-first approach and warrior mentality, and is the most popular figure in Florida football history.

Darren McFadden, RB – Arkansas: There was not a better running back in any conference throughout the decade than “Run-DMC”. One of the most explosive players to ever suit up in the SEC, fans with Arkansas Razorbacks tickets were treated to three spectacular years from McFadden. A freshman All-American in 2005 with over 1,000 yards, McFadden went on to become a two-time Heisman Trophy runner-up before declaring early for the NFL. Despite splitting carries with both Felix Jones and Peyton Hillis, McFadden still became the second leading rusher in SEC history, behind only the great Hershel Walker, rushing for 1,647 yards in 2006 and 1,830 yards in 2007. He is also only the second running back in history to win the Doak Walker Award twice, joining Ricky Williams in that exclusive distinction. Blessed with both blazing speed and great strength, McFadden was the total package at running back, and few opponents truly figured out how to stop him.

David Pollack, DE – Georgia: The SEC has built its reputation as a fierce defensive conference over the last decade, and Pollack takes the crown as the best defender of the decade. A relentless pass rusher for the Bulldogs, Pollack was a three time first-team All-American, only the second player in team history to accomplish the feat. He won multiple awards, including the Bednarik, Hendricks, Lombardi and Lott trophies, and finished his career at UGA with 36 sacks, which is still third in SEC history. One of the good guys in the college game over the last ten years, Pollack went on to become a first round pick in 2005 before injuries derailed a promising NFL career.

  • FSU Firing on All Cylinders as ACC Play Begins

    EJ Manuel | Seminoles Tickets

With huge wins in each of the first two weeks of the season for Florida State, fans with Seminoles tickets have a lot to cheer about to open the 2012 season. A week after defeating Murray State 69-3, FSU pummeled visiting Savannah State 55-0 in a game that was called in the third quarter due to thunder storms. QB EJ Manuel has been able to boost both his stats and his confidence during the early season schedule, which could be crucial for Florida State going forward. Defensively, the Seminoles have looked fantastic as well, and head coach Jimbo Fisher has to feel confident that his defense will not suffer the kind of breakdowns they did a year ago.

The ‘Noles will face a much more difficult test in Week Three, as they kick off their conference schedule at home against Wake Forest. FSU has had trouble with the Demon Deacons in recent seasons, including last season’s 35-30 defeat, and Wake Forest has won four out of the last six contests between the two schools. The Deacons have gotten off to a 2-0 start in 2012 as well, and are coming off a 28-27 victory over conference rival UNC, so the Seminoles cannot expect to win as easily as they have for the first two weeks. Of particular concern for FSU will likely be the tandem of QB Tanner Price and WR Michael Campanaro, who have connected frequently during the first two weeks of the season. While Florida State’s pass defense has been elite the first two weeks of the season, the caliber of opponents they faced during that time are not nearly as talented as the pass-catch duo from Winston-Salem. Fortunately for the Seminoles, they have the perfect lineup to slow down the Deacons, as DE Bjoern Werner leads the nation in sacks with five, and CB Xavier Rhodes should be able to handle Campanaro in coverage. Offensively, look for the Seminoles to try and pound the ball against Wake Forest’s undersized defensive line. Fisher has done a good job reestablishing the running game in the first two weeks of the season, and this game could be where that practice pays off. FSU will not run over the Deacons they way they did to their first two opponents, but the ‘Noles should have the talent to notch their first ACC victory of 2012.

  • Freeze Improves to 2-0 as Ole Miss Stifles UTEP

Hugh Freeze | Ole Miss Football Tickets

The Mississippi Rebels improved to 2-0 on the season in the second week of the season, as head coach Hugh Freeze and his young squad took care of business against UTEP, defeating the Miners 28-10 at home in Oxford. Quarterback Bo Wallace has continued to make Freeze look very smart for anointing him the starter, connecting on 15-of-22 passes for 174 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions. He also showed off his impressive mobility for the second week in a row, running for 53 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Perhaps most tellingly, Barry Brunetti did not attempt a pass in the game, and it seems that Freeze has settled on Wallace as his full-time quarterback going forward. While Brunetti is a fine player in his own right, Wallace has earned the spot with his stellar play early in the season, and most teams play more effectively when they can rely on just one quarterback to move the offense. It has to be a great sign to fans with Ole Miss football tickets that the offense is producing as well as it has early in the season, as the Rebels struggled offensively all year in 2011. The balance between the run and pass has been terrific, and Freeze and Wallace are getting a number of different playmakers involved in the action.

Defensively, the Rebels appear to be ahead of where they were a season ago as well. Ole Miss only allowed 311 yards of total offense against the Miners, and sacked quarterback Nick Lamaison five times on the day. Through two games, the Rebels have nine sacks, just four away from their season total of 13 in 2011, and the pass rush appears to be one of the most improved areas on the team. With a big game against Texas in the third week of the season, the defense will hope to have another solid performance against Longhorns QB David Ash. The Rebels still have several weeks to prepare for the start of conference play, but if the early season is any indication, Ole Miss could be one of the most surprising teams in the conference this year.

  • Offense Comes Alive in Romp Against Kent St.

Randall Cobb | Kentucky Wildcats Tickets

A week after suffering a loss in the season opener against archrival Louisville, UK football regrouped in a big way against visiting Kent State, treating fans with Kentucky Wildcats tickets to an impressive 47-14 victory over the Golden Flashes. Head coach Joker Phillips continues to look good in his choice of Maxwell Smith as his starting quarterback. Smith had one of the best days for a quarterback in the conference, completing an impressive 30-of-39 passes for 354 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions against the Golden Flashes, and is now second in the SEC in passing yardage after two weeks. He has done a great job of finding his playmakers on the outside, especially senior wide receivers Aaron Boyd and La’Ron King, who could be one of the top receiving duos in the conference this season. Boyd and King are each 6-foot-4, and their imposing size could give SEC cornerbacks a lot of trouble. Phillips was also able to establish the ground game in Week Two, and junior Raymond Sanders rushed for a career-high 115 yards and a touchdown with CoShik Williams sidelined. Success on the ground will be key as the season continues, as the threat of the running game should keep opposing defenses on focusing in on Smith.

Perhaps most importantly, Kentucky looked far better defensively than they did in Week One, limiting the Golden Flashes to just two touchdowns on the day. UK sacked Kent State quarterback Spencer Keith three times, a number they will hope to match in their upcoming conference games. LB Avery Williamson has been very productive in the middle of the Wildcats’ defense, racking up 19 tackles through two games, and appears to be the next in a long line of successful UK linebackers. The Wildcats face an uphill battle to obtain bowl eligibility this season, as they play in one of the most competitive conferences in the nation, but with more performances like the one they just had against Kent State, UK could surprise quite a few teams in 2012.

  • Big Ten Power Rankings Week One

Ohio State | Football Tickets for Sale

Ohio State – This is what the rest of the conference was scared of. The Urban Meyer era got off to a great start against an overmatched Miami (OH) squad, and QB Braxton Miller looks like the perfect fit in Meyer’s offense.

Michigan State – Beating Boise State is no small task, and while QB Andrew Maxwell struggled in his debut, the Spartans still found a way to close the game out with a W. RB Le’Veon Bell simply could not be stopped in the second half, and looks like one of the best backs in the country.

Nebraska – QB Taylor Martinez has had productive days through the air like this before, but he has never looked as good doing it. With improved mechanics and confidence in his third year as a starter, Nebraska could make a run at the Big 10 championship.

Wisconsin – The Badgers were not supposed to struggle this much. Although they escaped their battle with Northern Iowa with a win, they do not appear to be the team they were a season ago. Fortunately, they have time to figure it out.

Michigan – The worst possible way for the Wolverines to start the year, as they were thoroughly outclassed by ‘Bama. Brady Hoke still has a talented squad to work with, but they will have to rediscover their confidence after the mess in Arlington.

Purdue – Eastern Kentucky is hardly an accurate measuring stick, but Purdue looked very impressive in a dominant 48-6 victory. They may have a bit of a QB controversy brewing with the big game by the long-forgotten Robert Marve.

Illinois – The Fighting Illini beat a good Western Michigan squad to start the season, but the biggest concern to come out of the game was the injury to QB Nathan Scheelhaase. New coach Tim Beckman has to be impressed with the defensive effort his team put up.

Northwestern – The Wildcats nearly blew a huge lead to Syracuse, but were bailed out by what looks like an explosive offense. Pat Fitzgerald cannot be happy with the way the defense performed in the second half.

Iowa – The Hawkeyes defense looked very sharp against Northern Illinois, but with James Vandenberg and the offense struggling so much, the D had to step up in a big way. Vandenberg’s 3.9 yards per attempt needs to go up dramatically.

Minnesota – The Gophers managed to outlast the Rebels on the road, winning 30-27 in the third overtime. The defense made a number of key plays to win the turnover battle.

Penn State – It is hard to imagine that the Nittany Lions could be the worst team in the conference, but after being defeated by Ohio, expectations have to be scaled back. It looks like it is going to be a long year for Bill O’Brien and Penn State.

Indiana – A win is a win, but the Hoosiers are going to need more than a one-touchdown victory over Indiana State to prove that they are improved from the team that went 1-11 last year.

  • State Opportunistic in Opening Victory

    Tyler Russell | Bulldogs Tickets

Fans with Bulldogs tickets could not have asked for a more complete game from their team opening weekend, as Mississippi State easily handled Jackson State 56-9 at home in Starkville. While the Tigers are not the same caliber as the SEC teams that the Bulldogs will soon be facing, it had to be an encouraging sign to head coach Dan Mullen and his staff that the team came out looking this strong right out of the gate. With a pivotal matchup with SEC West rival Auburn waiting in Week 2, it was especially important that the Bulldogs came out on top of their game, so they do not show any signs of rust when the Tigers come to town.

State was balanced on offense, with a nearly 50/50 run and pass split between their 395 yards of total offense. New full-time starter Tyler Russell was successful throwing the football, and the talented signal caller completed 15-of-24 passes for 185 yards and a pair of touchdowns. It was a mistake-free, efficient performance from the quarterback Mullen expects to lead his team for the rest of the season. LaDarius Perkins and Derrick Milton formed an effective duo on the ground, as the two combined for over 120 yards and three touchdowns on the ground on just 17 carries. The Bulldogs were sharp defensively as well, limiting Jackson State to just nine points and 265 yards of total offense. State also capitalized on a pair of mistakes by Tigers QB Dedric McDonald, as both Darius Slay and Matthew Wells returned interceptions for touchdowns to help put the game out of reach. In a league full of explosive offenses, it is very helpful to have defenders who are playmakers, and it appears that the Bulldogs do not have to rely solely on CB Johnthan Banks to make impact plays on defense. While it is not clear exactly how State will measure up with the rest of the conference, a win that complete should give the Bulldogs a lot of confidence as the next month of the season unfolds.
