The Arkansas Razorbacks are a program that is steadily gaining prowess as one of the elite teams in the SEC after repeated 10+ win seasons.  In fact, after finishing 11-2 overall last season (with their only losses coming against at #3 Alabama and #1 LSU who went on to play one another for the BCS National Championship) hopes could not be higher for the Razorback nation.  Many college football experts argue that Arkansas finished the 2011 season as one of the top 5 teams in the nation, unfortunately for them however the two best teams from last season were in not only their conference but their division as well.  After beating the #8 ranked Kansas State Wildcats 29-16 in last seasons Cotton Bowl the Razorbacks are hoping to earn a spot in the BCS National Championship for the upcoming season, however they fully understand that this can most likely be accomplished with either no losses or one at the most.  With August quickly approaching Arkansas and the rest of the sports community are looking forward to what should once again be a very entertaining college football season.

3. Cobi Hamilton: Wide Receiver

Perhaps the biggest strength from last years Arkansas team was their effectiveness in the passing game and after losing their top wide-outs to the NFL, Cobi Hamilton should fill those vacancies rather easily.  Hamilton was the third option for quarterback Tyler Wilson last season and the 6 foot 3, 210 pound pass catcher proved to be a consistent threat with a tremendous amount of potential racking up 34 catches for 542 yards and 4 touchdowns.  With Hamilton and QB Tyler Wilson both entering their senior season they will undoubtedly attempt to solidify their careers as Razorbacks with another BCS bowl victory.

2. Dennis Johnson: Running Back

Although the Razorback offense did not place a high priority on the running game last season they coaching staff understands the vital importance to a balanced attack.  Though last years primary back Dennis Johnson only carried the ball a total of 106 times for 3 touch downs he did average over 6 yards per carry.  Furthermore, he had a highlight worthy 71-yard touch down run last season that showed off his explosiveness.

1. Tyler Wilson: Quarterback

Last years Cotton Bowl MVP Tyler Wilson opted to suspend his NFL dreams by a year when he decided to return to the University of Arkansas for his senior season.  Wilson threw for 3,638 yards last season and 24 touchdowns while only throwing 6 interceptions.  He is in the pre-season Heisman discussion and will have many opportunities to either reinforce or disprove that praise.  How far the Razorbacks go this season will be largely predicated on the play of Wilson and the offense as they were 15^th in the nation in points per game last season and will look to improve upon that mark.

The 2012 college football season is upon us, and with the Razorbacks ready to renew a long time rivalry with Texas A&M University as well as compete against other foes including LSU and Alabama the entire nation is ready.  Here is, in our opinion, five of the greatest football players to ever attend Arkansas.

5. Felix Jones, Running back:

Though he spent most of his time at Arkansas backing-up Darren McFadden, Felix Jones had an outstanding career as a Razorback.  As a matter of fact, all three running backs that played together (Peyton Hillis, Darren McFadden and Felix Jones) are all currently doing very well for their respective NFL teams.  Jones’ showed steady improvement throughout his 3 seasons, rushing twice for over 1,000 yards and getting 11 touch downs his junior year.  Most impressive though were his 9.1 rush yards per carry that led the nation in 2007.  He currently plays for the Dallas Cowboys.

4. Ken Hamlin, Free Safety:

Ken Hamlin was the first freshman and as well only the second defensive back to lead the school in tackles.  He recorded an incredible 104 tackles with 57 of them being solo.  He had a great Sophomore year as well being selected as a Second-team All American.  However his greatest season came in his junior year when he forced eight fumbles, recovering five, and intercepted 9 passes.  He was named a First-team All American and furthermore awarded the Jim Thorpe Award.  He is the first player in school history to record 3 consecutive seasons.

3. Chuck Dicus, Wide Receiver:

Dicus played from 1968-1970 for Arkansas and finished his career as the school’s most productive receiver ever and his totals of 118 catches for 1,854 yards are still the eighth most all time.  He was an All American as well as the MVP of the 1969 Sugar Bowl, registering 12 catches for 169 yards and the game’s only touchdown.  He went on to serve as president of the Razorback foundation and is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame.

2. Steve Atwater, Safety:

Originally recruited as a quarterback and later converted to a Safety, Atwater was 3 times elected to the All-SEC team and as well was a 2 time All-American.  Furthermore he finished his career with the most interceptions of any Razorback, 14 which still holds to this day.  He is a member of the Razorback All-Century Team and the All-Decade team for the 1980’s.

1. Darren McFadden, Running back:

McFadden is without a doubt the most outstanding Arkansas Razorback ever.  He rushed for over 1,000 yards in each of his three seasons, registering a long run of 80 yards twice.  Furthermore his touch down production each year increased, scoring 11 in his final season.  He was the Walter Camp Award winner, back to back Doak Walker Award winner and SEC Offensive Player of the Year.

Eleven wins and two losses, this record has proven to be a wildcard ever since the BCS format was established.  For the Arkansas Razorbacks, this was a very successful season.  Their only two losses coming to division foes and eventual participants in the BCS National Championship Game Alabama and LSU have the entire Razorback team feeling very optimistic about the upcoming 2012 college football season.  Both teams were considered the nation’s elite for most, if not all, of the 2011 season. 

With quarterback Tyler Wilson returning for his senior season the Razorbacks should be poised at no longer being the third team in the toughest division in college football.  Wilson had a great junior season last year throwing for 3,638 yards with a 63.2 completion percentage, 24 touchdowns and a 148.8 quarterback rating.  Tyler did a phenomenal job stepping into the shoes of predecessor Ryan Mallet, who likewise had a great final year for the Razorbacks in 2010 and is currently a back-up quarterback for the New England Patriots.

Although Arkansas’ top two wide-outs from last season left to the NFL Draft, Jarius Wright and Joe Adams, this does present an opportunity for possession receivers such as junior Cobi Hamilton and tight end Chris Gragg to step into big time roles as go-to players.  Joining the skill players will be freshmen tight end Deondre Skinner and running back Kaleb Blanchard who were top recruits and should make immediate impacts.  As previously stated, this is Tyler Wilson’s team and he looks to improve on an already outstanding season that had the Arkansas Razorbacks 13^th in the nation in overall passing yards per game at 300.7 ypg.  Joining the freshman is top Razorback recruit Brooks Ellis who at 6 foot 2, 215 pounds should be a versatile defensive option in the 3 technique.  Ellis with help from the many returning starters from last year’s defense should bring Arkansas’ total points per game allowed down below the 22.2 given up in 2011.

Arkansas opens up with 2 non-conference games and then host the defending national champion Alabama Crimson Tide on September 15^th.  This game will be a true indicator for just how much noise the Razorbacks’ will make in the SEC, and national championship picture, for the 2012 season.  Before playing LSU at home the final regular season game of the year, Arkansas will go onto play at Auburn on October 6^th and this will most likely be their toughest road game of the year.  How the LSU and Alabama games go will undoubtedly write the script for what guarantees to be an exciting and drama filled 2012 college football season.  You can bet that a week 3 win against Alabama will catapult Arkansas into the BCS top 5 rankings and furthermore, Tyler Wilson into the Heisman discussion.
